A wonderful and rare basket in Degikup form by the noted weaver Tootsie Dick Sam. Tootsie was one of the most respected weavers at Abe Cohn's Emporium Co. This piece is accompanied by a letter of authentication by noted Washoe expert Marvin Cohodas. The use of pictorial elements and lettering were exceptionally difficult, and are expertly done.

South Eastern Basket Koasati (Coushatta) #7546
c. 1930
Very few of these baskets are on the market, and this is one of the best. The Koasati originally belonged to the Creek Confederacy before breaking away in approximately 1800 and moving to Alabama and finally settling in Louisiana. They make twilled cane baskets through a technique they developed of coiling the needles of native pines into beautiful baskets.
