Bone haft with stone blade, hide wrapped. Used by women for scraping skins before tanning. Ex: Collection of Roy Marsh, a trader on the Crow Reservation near Pryor, Montana. Roy Marsh had a museum/mercantile/pawnshop in Pryor after the turn of the century. His collection included many artifacts belonging to local Crows such as Plain Feather, Plenty Coups, Plain Bull, and Old Dwarf.12 1/2" long.

Painted Militia Snare Drum, Mexican War Era #4323
c. 1830-40
A very fine ash drum made of bent wood with one seam secured with brass tacks. These tacks are balanced by a row of tacks on the opposite side. A design of brass tacks has also been added around the vent hole. The shell appears to have a natural finish that has darkened with time. It bears an American eagle breasted with a red, white, & blue shield surmounted with white clouds. A twisted scroll is held in the eagle's beak. Traditional olive branch & arrows are clutched in the talons. The top batter head & bottom snare gate were painted, & possibly over-painted, in the 19th century. Each hoop has one seam held with nails. The drumheads, rope and ear tugs have been professionally replaced.
The maker's label is visible through the vent hole reads: "John Ashton & Company, Music, Umbrella, Parasol and Cane Store, No. 97 Washington St. Near the old south Church, Boston".
John Ashton was in business from 1818 to 1843.
