Lakota Dance Shield, 19th century
A buffalo hide/parfleche dance shield, painted in red, white and green, with a stylized horned head that likely represents the buffalo spirit, encircled by lightning bolts. Ornamented with buffalo hair and dyed domestic goose feathers. Made at Fort Marian by Making Medicine, also known as "Owl". Provenance: Owned by Thomas E. Mails and pictured on page 143 of his book, "Mystic Warriors of the Plains;" to Liilian Miller; to Glenwood Swanson; to Mr. & Mrs. James Alsdorf. See file for full ethnographic evaluation.
