Blackfeet Iniskim Bag #8613
c. 19th c
Blackfeet Iniskim with pony beaded pouch. An Iniskim can be one of several unusually shaped rocks. The most sought after by the Blackfeet are the baculite fossils. The tentacles of the ancient relative of the octopus and squid from which they came are tapered and segmented so they break apart into irregular parts called baculites and vary from large [5" to 6"] to tiny ones [3/4"]. They are shaped more or less in the form of a buffalo. They were common in the inland seas that covered most of North America and disappeared from among the Earth's living creatures about 60 to 70 million years ago. There are several places in Blackfeet country where they may be found. Inasmuch as the natives view them as very powerful holy objects, the location of these places is held in great secrecy.
